Srebrenica

Srebrenica in Bosnia is the sight of the last genocide on the European continent in July 1995, when Nato refused to maintain its safe haven in the small spa town to defend the thousands of Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) who sought safety from the surrounding Serbian troops. Ever since, the town has suffered from deep-rooted divisions, suspicion and corruption. Money from the UN, the EU, Holland and the US has been ‘lost’ or squandered by politicians. Efforts to transform the town have been frustrated by regulations and arbitrary political decisions. A handful of brave and imaginative locals, and in particular, women, have attempted to reunite the town and to create jobs and businesses to revitalise the economy.
